Borosilicate glass is most commonly associated with laboratory use, as it is able to withstand a wide range of temperatures due to the inclusion of boron trioxide in its makeup, allowing it to expand slowly and absorb thermal shock when exposed to heat. While soda-lime glass accounts for 90% of manufactured glass in the world, including the vast majority of functional glass objects, it is unable to survive extreme changes in temperature due to a much faster rate of expansion with heat exposure.
