Tramp Art is a form of folk art that flourished in late nineteenth and early twentieth century America. Colorado artist Bob Olson learned how to make these intricate pieces from this grandfather, Niels Pedersen. This variety of Tramp Art is known as the "crown of thorns” style, in which pieces are chip-carved, layered, and notched together in an interlocking and overlapping fashion without the use of glue or nails. It is the most rare and coveted style amongst collectors of historical tramp art, and Olsen is one very few artisans who continues to practice the craft.
